HMD Global made it clear long ago It intends to launch smartphones under its own brand And not under the Nokia umbrella. Several models It has come since then, but today the firm has taken an important step forward. Not because it’s new HMD Skyline It looks really interesting, but because of everything it is in terms of repairability, a matter of capital importance in the world of technology and with which HMD Global has been able to surprise.
And the new HMD Skyline, very reminiscent of the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia N9, allows the user to change the back cover, battery and even the screen, all from home and using only a screwdriver and a pick. the guitar A very interesting proposal that we are going to get to know better below.

According to HMD Global, the new HMD Skyline features “Gen 2 repairability”. This is a term the firm uses to refer to how easy it is to repair the terminal. An example the company gave is that the number of steps required to change a screen is 65% less than the first repairable smartphone. Nokia G22.
The terminal includes an internal camshaft driven by a screw that speeds up disassembly. Once the cover is opened, you can access a series of screws that allow Disconnect and remove the screen cable, which reads automatically. To install the new one, you just need to clean off the remaining glue and add some new glue strips, all while maintaining the IP54 resistance. The battery is also swappable, as well as the curved charging port and back cover, all thanks to iFixit.
In terms of design, the HMD Skyline is made of recycled aluminum and is reminiscent of Nokia mobile phones. Winds Mobile (rest in peace). The back, protected by tempered glass, has a two-part finish that gives it quite a quirky look, a pattern that is repeated on the front. The screen, with its curved corners, is integrated into the chassis, whose corners are straight. If one has a Lumia 920 or a Nokia N9, the finish is very, very similar.
Something interesting happened Customizable side buttons. similarly Latest iPhone action buttonsThe HMD Skyline button can be customized to perform different actions when we hold it down and/or press it twice (launch an app, call an assistant, etc.).
In full hertz and mid-range engines
Talking about the screen, HMD Globa has implemented a 6.55-inch POLED panel with FullHD+ resolution (2,400 x 1,080 pixels), 144 Hz refresh rate and compatibility with HDR10. The screen format is quite elongated (20:9) and protected by Gorilla Glass 3, which is not the latest version, but should comply.
Under the hood we have eight or 12 Gigas of RAM and up to 256 GB of internal storage which, curiously, can be expanded via microSD card up to 512 GB (it’s seen less often). Engine is a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 (Qualcomm’s premium mid-range) which is powered by a 4,600 mAh capacity battery with fast and wireless charging of 33 and 15 watts respectively. As we said earlier, it is interchangeable.
The operating system is Android 14 and, perhaps, one of the most compromised points. It’s not because the version isn’t current, it’s because HMD Global only promises two years of major updates and three years of security patches. Already have brands Offers up to seven years of updates And it’s a real shame that a repairable terminal with so much potential is getting old in such a short time.
Let’s talk about the camera
One of the legacies that the Nokia Lumia range has left us with is the camera. Many years ago the Nokia Lumia 1020 surprised with a 41 megapixel sensor and pretty good results (which hasn’t aged too well, it must be said). HMD wants to resume that legacy, but is going one step further.
It is mounted on the back 108 megapixel main sensor, a wide angle of 13 and a telephoto of 50 with four-times optical zoom, all accompanied by a hybrid stabilization system (OIS+EIS). Up front we’ve got a 50-megapixel sensor with eye tracking to improve selfie focus. Also, starting in August it will be possible to record in 4K with the front camera.
