Google Doodle Celebrates Sophie Xeon’s Birthday: A Pioneer of Pop and Electronic Music

Today’s Google Doodle is a tribute to Sophie Jones, a Scottish musician, producer, and DJ, on her birthday. Sophie Xeon, also known as SOPHIE, was born on September 17, 1986, and sadly passed away on January 30, 2021. She is remembered for her powerful, experimental, and electronic music.

From a young age, Sophie was influenced by electronic and rave music, which she first heard on cassette tapes from her father. Using a toy keyboard, she began making her own music. In the 2000s, Sophie moved to Berlin and became part of the dance-pop group Motherland, performing in Germany and the UK. Despite her growing success, Sophie preferred to stay out of the public eye, and her name was often largely anonymous.

Sophie’s solo career began with the release of hits such as “Bipp” and “Lemonade.” These songs were included on her 2015 album PRODUCT. In addition to her solo career, Sophie also produced music for well-known artists such as Charli XCX, Kim Petras, and Madonna.

In 2017, Sophie came out publicly as a trans woman, marking a turning point in her career. She began doing more interviews and public appearances. The following year, she released Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides, an album that mixes electronic beats with songs about identity and self-acceptance. The album earned Sophie Xeon a Grammy nomination, making her the first trans artist nominated in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category.

Sophie Xeon will always be remembered for changing the landscape of pop music with her unique sound. In September 2024, an album titled SOPHY, produced by Sophie and her brother, is set to be released in her honor.

Happy Birthday, Sophie Xeon!
