Changing strategy is a constant at Apple. There was a time not too long ago when both the Pro and standard models shared a processor, and it made sense. Similar models, with differences in camera and screen technology to give it the Pro essence.
With the iPhone 14, Apple decided that with being “Pro” there had to be a “Pro” processor. Thus he decided to equip the iPhone 14 with the previous generation Apple A15 Bionic, reserving the new processor only for the most expensive model.
The same thing happened with the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro, only the Pro model has a new processor. According to the latest leak, the iPhone 16 will share a processor, which we haven’t seen in two years. Purpose? I am very afraid that they are not so clear.

One of the possible reasons responsible for this change in philosophy has to do with Apple Intelligence and its very demanding hardware requirements. So much so that they released the iPhone 15, which has the A16 Bionic instead of the A17 Pro in the iPhone 15 Pro.
Technically, No need to use A18 to move Apple Intelligence: A17 Pro is supported. The problem? The term could be a bad move for Apple. Due to its philosophy, the company cannot offer an iPhone 16 with an A17 Pro (“Pro” processor is only for “Pros”). This will force them to implement an A18 processor, which is shared with its older brothers.
This does not mean that the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro have the same processor. Barring a big surprise, if they share a chip, the iPhone 16 Pro will have a “Pro” variant with different benefits.
A small quibble that makes sense at the market level, though it takes us away from a past where when you bought the iPhone you bought, you got the best processor of the moment.
